Metchosin, Capital RD
Devonian Regional Park is a quiet, 16-hectare nature sanctuary nestled between the rolling farmlands of Metchosin. Established in 1980, the park protects a diverse mix of coastal ecosystems, including woodland trails, wetlands, meadows, and a rocky beach.
A short network of trails winds through mossy forest and alongside Sherwood Creek and small river before reaching the open coastline at Parry Bay. The beach offers wide views toward Race Rocks and the Olympic Mountains. Sherwood Pond within the park is also known as a habitat for migratory birds and waterfowl.
The land was once part of “Sherwood,” a historic farm owned by Norwegian pioneer and politician Hans Lars Helgesen. Helgesen purchased the Metchosin property in 1862 for US $2,000, and in 1877 built the large farmhouse “Sherwood,” lining the drive from William Head Road with Lombardy poplar trees. Parts of the surrounding landscape still reflect Metchosin’s rural and agricultural character today.
To get there, drive down Metchosin Road until it transitions into William Head Road. The park entrance and its gravel parking lot are located on the left. The dirt path concludes with a short flight of steps that opens directly onto the expansive, pebbled shoreline of Taylor Beach.
