The cat is the center of the universe. These divine creatures have graciously granted certain humans the privilege of taking care of them. In their boundless wisdom, they have also guided the minds of a chosen few among the chosen to discover a way for the two-legged tribe to properly honor the Essence of Cat. This happened in the most cat-friendly neighborhood of Victoria, B.C. — yes, of course, in Fernwood.
In fact, it has already happened for the second time. May 30th, 2026, marked the Second Annual Fernwood Cat Walk. On the very same day, in this neighborhood famous for its artistic community, other highly interesting events took place — the 18th Annual Fernwood Art Stroll and the Strawberry Ichigo Market 2026. However, hundreds of artists, creators, chefs, and a whole truckload of strawberries didn't stand a ghost of a chance against the feline stroll. With effortless ease and a lazy stretch, the cats utterly dominated Fernwood!
The Fernwood Cat Walk debuted in 2025 and immediately exceeded the organizers' wildest expectations, drawing nearly 500 attendees. The success of the inaugural year convinced organizers to return in 2026 with an expanded route and more participants.
The idea behind the Fernwood Cat Walk is both simple and brilliant: local residents present their cats to the public, and visitors, armed with a route map, set off on a self-guided tour from one "cat stop" to the next. Felines could be spotted peering from windows, relaxing on specially designed "catios," lounging on leashes, or simply hanging out in their favorite spots for watching the world go by. Owners happily chatted with guests and shared stories about their beloved pets.
The hub of the event was the Little Fernwood gallery, where local pet vendors, artisans, and community organizations gathered even before the stroll began. Here, visitors could pick up their route maps, meet representatives from local animal welfare groups, and even encounter the event’s first feline participants.
A special highlight of this year's event was the partnership with the Victoria Humane Society. Local businesses and volunteers were also brought on board, all for the ultimate goal — strengthening neighborhood bonds and supporting Their Majesties the Cats, regardless of pedigree.
The organizers of the Fernwood Cat Walk have proven that you don't always need big stages or loud concerts to create an unforgettable community festival. Sometimes, all it takes is a few dozen cats and the open doors of your neighbors.
As for us, we are already looking forward to the next cat stroll. We hope the third edition will bring new experiences and new acquaintances.
