Muirside Cemetery / Millennium Memorial Park is a historically significant one-hectare community park. The park honors the legacy of the Muir family and Sooke's early pioneers. It serves as the final resting place of the pioneering Muir family, who played a pivotal role in Sooke's early development.
John Muir, a Scottish settler, arrived in Sooke with his family in 1851. By 1855, they had established the region's first successful steam-operated sawmill, contributing significantly to the local economy.
Muirside Cemetery became Sooke's first cemetery, with Ann Miller Muir, the family matriarch, being the first interred in 1875. Over the years, nearly 50 graves were established, with the last burial taking place in 1969.
