Cozy benches shaded by trees, the fragrant blend of blooming flowerbeds and vegetable gardens, narrow winding paths, and the soft hum of conversation — Arts & Music in the Gardens sets the mood first and foremost through its space. There is no feeling of a loud or exhausting mass event here. On the contrary, it feels as though you’ve stepped into an intimate garden party hosted by old friends. This refined intimacy is the true hallmark of the venue.

Every year on an August weekend, the picturesque grounds of the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (HCP) on the outskirts of Saanich transform into a seamless artistic space. This year, the program for the 32nd annual festival was enhanced by a competitive exhibition: the Sustainable Floral Art Installation Competition. And naturally, music and art in every form were present — four stages in various locations organically woven into the tapestry of blooms, and 61 tents featuring works from artisans and crafters scattered among the greenery, creating an open-air gallery. Yet, numbers aren’t what truly matter here.

Despite a rich line-up, there was no sense of rush or bustle anywhere on the grounds. Visitors casually strolled from one spot to another, relaxing on benches or swings in the shade of vibrant blooms, listening to the blend of live music and birdsong. No single element overshadowed another; everything complemented each other seamlessly.

Festivalgoers could not only admire or purchase unique creations but also chat directly with the artists themselves — and that is what matters most here. People don’t come to rush around trying to see everything; they come to walk through the gardens, listen to music, share conversation, and savour the summer. This annual event doesn't try to be pretentious or grand. Its true strength lies in the chance to slow down for a few hours and embrace harmony. It is a delightful summer outing infused with the fragrance of flowers.

Organizers devised an engaging quest for guests: an "event passport" that could be picked up at the entrance. Armed with the passport and a map, visitors set off on an expedition through the gardens. The goal was to locate specific vendor spots and collect unique stamps. A completed passport served as an entry ticket for the garden raffle. This simple idea transformed a routine walk among the stalls into an exciting journey of discovery. Even during the quest, however, no one was in a rush — curiosity didn't push people forward, but rather invited them to turn down another garden path, discover new hidden spots, make new acquaintances, and try something new.

For the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (HCP), this festival is an important fundraising event that supports the centre's year-round operations, gardens, and educational programs.
