Our Island is, above all, about community — a rich diversity of local communities, each with something special of its own. And while large provincial and international festivals tend to attract the most attention, these headline events are not what locals value the Island for most. Neighbourhood events and community celebrations are among Islanders’ favourite ways to spend their time.

Fall Fairfield is exactly that kind of event: local, welcoming and family-oriented. Organized annually by the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association (FGCA), the festival celebrated its 16th edition this year!

Naturally, there was no shortage of music, art, local makers and craftspeople, food trucks, children’s activities, and a friendly atmosphere — much like many community celebrations marking the beginning of the fall harvest season. But a few details set this particular festival apart. Small touches that, when pieced together, give visitors a genuine sense of home: a fruit pie contest featuring pies baked by local residents, rectangular hay bales serving as seats in front of the stage, and, of course, the wreaths.

Anyone who wished could weave their own wreath from fresh, fragrant greenery and flowers, then crown themselves — or someone else. In this simple way, a gathering of neighbours was effortlessly transformed into a merry assembly of Fairfield Gonzales’ own royalty.

The warm weather and live musical accompaniment completed the scene perfectly. And for anyone who missed their chance to be crowned — or arrived too late for a slice of pie — Fall Fairfield is well worth marking on the calendar for next year.
