Fisgard Lighthouse, located at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour near Victoria, is the oldest lighthouse on Canada’s west coast. Built in 1860, it guided mariners through the often treacherous waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and stands today as a National Historic Site.
Access to the lighthouse is through Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site, a 19th-century coastal artillery fort. From the parking lot, visitors follow a paved path through the fort’s historic grounds before crossing a short causeway to the striking red-and-white tower. Inside, exhibits share the stories of shipwrecks, navigation, and the lives of early lighthouse keepers.
