The Victoria Chinese Public School is a historic landmark in the heart of Victoria’s Chinatown — the oldest Chinatown in Canada. Established in 1899, it is the oldest Chinese school in North America and a symbol of resilience for the Chinese Canadian community. Built during a time of discrimination and segregation, the school provided education in both Chinese language and culture, while also supporting children barred from attending other schools.
Today, the building still serves as a cultural and educational hub, offering Chinese language classes and preserving artifacts that tell the story of early Chinese immigrants in British Columbia. Its heritage façade and rich history make it a must-see stop while exploring Chinatown.
