The Royal Theatre in downtown Victoria is one of the city's most prestigious and historic performance venues. Opened in 1913, this theatre has hosted world-class ballet, opera, concerts, and theatrical performances. Originally a vaudeville and silent film house, the Royal Theatre reflected the entertainment trends of the early 20th century. In 1987, it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in recognition of its cultural significance and contribution to the arts in British Columbia. Today, the Royal Theatre is home to Pacific Opera Victoria and the Victoria Symphony.
