Government House in Victoria is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor and the ceremonial home for all British Columbians. The estate stands on a 14.6-hectare property in the Rockland neighborhood and is steeped in history and tradition.

The first Government House was built in 1865, but it was destroyed by fire in 1899. A second, even grander mansion was completed in 1903, yet tragedy struck again when it burned down in 1957. The current building, designed in a Modern Tudor revival style, was finished in 1959 and continues to serve as an important symbol of civic life in British Columbia.

Throughout its history, Government House has hosted members of the Royal Family, including multiple visits from Queen Elizabeth II. It continues to be a site for diplomatic receptions, award ceremonies, and public gatherings.

Beyond the stately residence, the gardens are a major highlight. Open to the public year-round and free of charge, the grounds feature a variety of themed areas such as the Victorian Rose Garden, the British Columbia Native Plant Garden, and a heritage orchard. They also protect a rare Garry oak ecosystem, making it both a cultural and environmental treasure.

Today, over 300 volunteers help maintain the vibrant gardens, ensuring they remain a peaceful retreat for visitors and a living piece of British Columbia’s history.
