The Johnson Street Bridge in Victoria, British Columbia, is Canada's largest single-leaf bascule bridge, serving as a critical link between downtown and Victoria West. The bridge carries three vehicle lanes, a dedicated pedestrian walkway on the south side, and a multi-use pathway on the north.
There have been four bridges at this location since 1855, including a low wagon bridge, a railway swing bridge, the 1924 bascule bridge, and the current 2018 structure.
Opened on March 31, 2018, this modern structure replaced the historic "Blue Bridge" (1924–2018). The previous bridge was designed by the Strauss Bascule Company, led by engineer Joseph Strauss, who later became chief engineer of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. It was originally painted a dark colour and was repainted blue in 1979 to match the city's lampposts.
While the new bridge is not painted blue like its predecessor, it is equipped with blue LED lighting at night as a tribute to the original iconic colour.
