If you love exploring the Cowichan Valley Trail, here’s something to get excited about — a beautiful new bridge is ready to welcome you back! Starting Saturday, June 21, the newly rebuilt bridge over Holt Creek is officially reopened to the public, restoring a key connection on one of the most popular trails in the region.
The bridge has a new name and a deeper meaning. Formerly known as the Holt Creek Bridge, it will now be called the Q’ixluts Bridge. The name was chosen in collaboration with the Cowichan Tribes and comes from the Hul’q’umi’num language, meaning “the colour of the creek bed, black” — a beautiful nod to the black shale lining the creek.
The new bridge has been constructed with a steel frame and a wooden deck, making it stronger, safer, and capable of supporting emergency and maintenance vehicles. So it’s not only scenic — it’s built to last.
This project is a great example of how reconciliation, sustainability, and recreation can come together in one meaningful community upgrade. So grab your bike, lace up your boots, and get ready to enjoy the trail like never before. The Q’ixluts Bridge is officially open — and it’s more than just a crossing; it’s a celebration of culture, nature, and connection.
