This is one of the oldest public parks in Victoria, officially established in the late 1800s, but the land holds a much deeper history as part of the traditional territory of the Lekwungen (Songhees) people.
Here, carefully maintained flower gardens sit side by side with wild, natural spaces. Ponds blend into open grassy fields, while winding paths lead through shaded forest and out toward wide coastal views. The floral displays are especially memorable in spring and summer — one of the park’s most loved features.
But what truly defines Beacon Hill Park is its everyday wildlife.
Ducks, geese, and swans gather around the ponds. Herons stand quietly along the edges. Turtles line up on logs, completely still, soaking in the sun like it’s their full-time job. And then there are the peacocks — freely roaming and impossible to ignore.
Beyond the nature, the park is built for daily life.
There are wide lawns for picnics, trails for walking or running, playgrounds for kids, and quiet corners if you just want to sit. You’ll also find a seasonal children’s farm, sports fields, and one of the tallest totem poles in the world, carved in 1956.
Beacon Hill Park is not only about quiet walks and scenery. In summer, it also becomes a small outdoor stage for the city.
At the Cameron Bandshell, free community concerts bring music into the park: from folk and jazz to orchestral and local band performances. Visitors come with picnic blankets, sit on the grass, and enjoy live music in an open-air setting, often in the afternoon or early evening. It’s a long-standing tradition in Victoria’s summer calendar and part of a wider series of free public arts programs across the city.
Nearby, Mile 0 of the Trans-Canada Highway marks the beginning (or end) of a route stretching across the entire country — a small detail that connects this peaceful park to something much bigger.
