Vanisland Park has been named one of Canada’s most spectacular by The New York Times

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, on the remote west coast of Vancouver Island, has earned a place on the New York Times’ list of Canada’s five most spectacular parks — a nod to its dramatic coastal scenery, ancient rainforests, and over 100 protected offshore islands.

Praised for its sweeping beaches and relative seclusion compared to many U.S. parks, Pacific Rim was highlighted as a quieter, equally awe-inspiring alternative to Washington’s Olympic National Park. The Times described the park as offering a “peaceful, edge-of-the-world kind of feeling,” with its combination of old-growth forests, intertidal trails, and abundant marine life attracting both adventurers and solitude-seekers.

“There’s an edge-of-the-world kind of feeling here. It’s very peaceful,” — Kim Gray, Toque & Canoe (as quoted by the New York Times).

As the New York Times points out, travellers frustrated by budget cuts and crowding in U.S. national parks might want to look north. Canada’s national parks offer similarly awe-inspiring scenery, with more space, less congestion, and in some cases, a friendlier exchange rate.

The feature highlights five standout destinations across the country:

  • Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, British Columbia
  • Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta
  • Fundy National Park, New Brunswick
  • Banff National Park, Alberta
  • Kluane National Park and Reserve, Yukon

What sets Pacific Rim apart is its coastal wilderness and easy access. Rain or shine (and there's plenty of both), the park remains inviting thanks to boardwalk trails through towering cedar and hemlock forests, dramatic ocean views, and endless opportunities for beachcombing, wildlife watching, and kayaking.

The New York Times calls Pacific Rim National Park Reserve a top alternative to Olympic National Park in Washington State — and with good reason. Both share a similar ecosystem of old-growth rainforest and rugged coastline, but Pacific Rim offers quieter trails, less traffic, and a distinct West Coast charm.

For American travellers or Vancouver Islanders looking to stay local this summer, it’s an ideal destination that feels worlds away.
