The Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation is taking bold steps to grow Indigenous tourism on Vancouver Island, backed by $1.149 million in new funding to expand cultural offerings at Tin Wis Resort in Tofino.
Phase one includes: a new permanent carving shed, upcoming totem pole installations, major upgrades to the Wickaninnish Conference Hall, including a new roof and kitchen space, these enhancements aim to create a fully immersive experience for visitors while honouring Tla-o-qui-aht heritage.
The next phase of the project focuses on mentorship and entrepreneurship, helping youth and community members launch their own small businesses as part of a long-term strategy to capture 10% of Tofino’s tourism economy within a decade.
Already home to the award-winning Tsawaak RV Resort, Tin Wis is evolving into a cultural and economic gateway for Tla-o-qui-aht-led tourism experiences.
“We want Tin Wis to be a place where learning, culture, and business come together,” said Nik Vischschraper, CEO of the Tla-o-qui-aht Development Corporation.
